The forums are an opportunity for Commonwealth departmental representatives to learn about the latest developments in Australian and international climate research from leading experts in the field.

The July event was also an opportunity for senior ACE CRC scientists to present summaries of our two most recent Position Analysis publications (details below).

The morning session, Understanding Past & Future Climates, was presented by Dr Tas van Ommen and Dr Tessa Vance examined how ACE CRC scientists are using Antarctic ice cores to conduct world-leading research into past Australian and global climates. Of special relevance to Australian policy makers was how the ACE CRC is using information from ice cores to gain new insights into extreme drought and flooding events across mainland Australia over the past 1000 years.

The afternoon session, Antarctic Sea Ice & Climate Change, presented by Dr Phil Reid and Dr Rob Massom examined the topical issue of Antarctic sea ice, its impact on shipping operations, and efforts towards an Australian-based sea ice forecasting system.
